Ed Dames served as an electronic warfare officer and scientific and technical intelligence officer before becoming deeply involved in what was known as the Stargate Project, a U.S. Army unit dedicated to exploring psychic phenomena for military and intelligence applications. He was both a training and operations officer for this secretive unit, which was part of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and later transitioned to the CIA. There were fears during the Cold War that psychic abilities could be weaponized by the Soviets to devastating effect. Theories included the ability to read secret documents, influence leaders' thoughts, cause instant death from a distance, or disable military equipment. This led to the U.S. exploring psychic phenomena as a countermeasure.
