Signor Gualdi was said to have lived in Venice for a period, where he was known for his sober and simple lifestyle, earning him the nickname "the Sober Signor." His presence in Venice was marked by his regular life, composed manners, and simple attire, which made him somewhat of a local curiosity.
 According to lore, Gualdi was believed to possess extraordinary abilities or knowledge, possibly related to alchemy or life extension. There's a story where he was suspected of using a form of magic or alchemy to rejuvenate himself by drawing life force from others.
 Gualdi was known to have a collection of fine pictures, which he showed to visitors. This collection, along with his deep knowledge across various arts and sciences, added to his enigmatic persona. His wealth was peculiar, he never seemed to engage in commerce or receive letters, yet he always paid in ready money, suggesting either hidden wealth or alchemical means of generating gold.
 One of the more famous stories involves Gualdi inviting a Venetian nobleman and his daughter to view his art collection. During this visit, an incident occurred where the nobleman noticed a portrait of Gualdi that seemed to change or reveal something about his true nature, leading to a moment of tension. However, Gualdi quickly diffused the situation with his usual composure.
 After this incident, Gualdi mysteriously left Venice. His departure was as sudden as his arrival, leaving behind only more questions about his true identity and purpose in Venice.
Gualdi has been painted as a Rosicrucian adept with knowledge of the philosopher's stone or elixir of life. This makes sense considering his knowledge of mysticism, alchemy, and eternal life.  His knowledge of transmutation of base metals into gold set up his eternal future.
